Bus PCMCIA

The PCIMCIA-device

With the advent of portable computers there was a question on creation of the universal and compact interface for connection of external devices. As such interface the standard de facto became interface PCMCIA supported by Association PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association), the uniting company, developing peripheral devices for portable computers. Abbreviation PCMCIA caused many censures of the труднопроизносимостью. There is even playful interpretation PCMCIA as « People Cant Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms », that is translated as « People be not capable to remember computer abbreviations ». In result for PCMCIA today it is accepted to use more harmonious term PC Card.

Devices PC Card in size with a usual credit card are alternative to usual payments of the expansion connected to Bus ISA. In this standard modules of memory, modems and faxes - modems, SCSI-adapters are issued, { ISA} Network maps, Sound maps, winchesters, interfaces of CD ROM, etc.

Standard PC Card for communication(connection) between a map and the corresponding device (the adapter or port) a computer defines(determines) a 68-contact mechanical connector. On him 16 categories under the data and 26 categories under the address that allows to address 64 Mb of memory directly are selected. On the party(side) of module PC Card it is located the connector - socket, and on the party(side) of a computer — a connector- plug. Besides the standard defines(determines) three various lengths of contacts of a connector - plug. As connection and disconnect PC Card can occur at a working computer (so-called "hot") that on the module the pressure(voltage) of a feed(meal) all over again moved, and only then the pressure(voltage)of the alarm lines, corresponding contacts are executed by longer.

The second version of specification PCMCIA defines(determines) types of overall dimensions for PC Card (Type I, Type II and Type III), distinguished on thickness. Two first such as PC Card the sizes up to 54 mm (2,12 inches) at width and have 85,6 mm (3,37 inches) at length. Devices PC Card corresponding to sizes Type I, should have thickness of 3,3 mm, and corresponding Type II — 5,0 mm in the middle and 3,3 mm on edges(territories). PC Card Type III have thickness of 10,5 mm and, hence, are unsuitable for use in slots for modules Type I and II. Thickness of module Type III on edges(territories) also is equal 3,3 mm. So-called slots of double height are necessary for the third type of modules. Modules Type III meet very seldom and containusually hard disks.

For increase in bandwidth of Bus PCMCIA specification CardBus which is expansion of Bus PCI for devices PC Card has been offered. Payments CardBus support a 32-bit exchange for frequency of 33 MHz. In it конструктиве are issued 100Мбитные network maps, interface payments SCSI and other devices demanding a fast exchange on the Bus. Controllers CardBus are supported in operational systems Windows 95, OSR 2.5 and to the full in Windows 98.

At use of old maps PCMCIA in sockets CardBus problems with compatibility are possible(probable). For devices PC Card cases of hardware and program incompatibility till now are distributed enough, therefore at a choice of corresponding payments of expansion PC Card it is necessary to spend careful check of their serviceability in a concrete hardware-software configuration.
